Congenital Infections
Congenital infections are caused by viruses, bacterias and parasites acquired through placenta or at time of birth. The infection may cause profound damage to fetus & newborn resulting in birth defects and fetal demise. Congenital infections have the potential to affect neurodevelopmental outcome of babies.
It is possible to improve survival and health of newborns by taking measures to prevent congenital infections by primary prevention which includes vaccination prior to pregnancy, hygiene measures & maternal screening to decrease burden of neonatal morbidity and mortality.
